Civil War-Dated Indian Head Cent
On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces fired upon Fort Sumter near Charleston, South Carolina, starting off what would be four years and 31 days of the American Civil War. During the war, the United States Mint struck copper-nickel cents featuring Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. Known as the Indian Head Cent, this coin began to disappear from circulation during the war as concerned citizens began hoarding them for their metal contents. In response, The Mint changed the coin’s composition to bronze in 1864—that’s what you have here, a first-year bronze Indian Head Cent.
First-Year 1864 Bronze Indian Head Cent In Good To Fine Condition
The coin also features Miss Liberty with a beaded necklace and a hair band emblazoned with a diamond. The reverse tells the tale of this beloved coin’s Civil War heritage: the Union Shield is at the top of a wreath of oak leaves. The classic Indian Head Cent hasn’t been struck for more than 110 years, and most have worn down to nothing in circulation, or they’ve been lost or destroyed. Yours will arrive in Good to Fine (G–F) condition. Order now!
