162-Year-Old Prussian Silver Commemorative Coin

Vintage European silver coinage can be few and far between these days. Finding even a small hoard becomes more difficult with each passing year. So, it was incredibly lucky that we managed to come across this unique 1861-dated Prussian Silver Thaler, a low-mintage, one-year-only issue from the German Empire’s most prominent and influential state that was released to commemorate that year’s coronation of King Wilhelm I and Queen Augusta. The coronation was a magnificent ceremony that took place took place at the famed Königsberg Castle just as the United States was becoming embroiled in its bloody and destructive Civil War.

Commemorating The Rise Of The First German Emperor

Struck at the Berlin Mint in 18.52 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, the coin’s obverse features the crowned busts King Wilhelm I and Queen Augusta, with the inscription “WILHELM KOENIG AUGUSTA KOENIGIN V. PREUSSEN.” Wilhelm I began his reign in Prussia in 1861 and was crowned German Emperor in 1871. Wilhelm held both titles until his death in 1888. He survived two assassination attempts during his reign, and upon his death he was succeeded by his son Frederick III, who reigned for just 99 days before giving way to his son, Kaiser Wilhelm II.
