1861–1865 Our Army Civil War Token PCGS MS66 RD
Finest And Best! Scarce Army & Navy Civil War Token
At the onset of the Civil War in 1861, many citizens began hoarding their coins, leaving few in circulation. Suddenly, coins became worth more than their face value and commerce nearly ground to a halt. To make up for this shortage, private minters took it upon themselves to strike copper tokens for circulation. Now known as Civil War Tokens, these pieces carried an accepted value of one penny and circulated widely until they were made illegal by Congress in April of 1864.
Nearly 9,000 Designs Were Passed Off As Legal Tender
Prior to that, though, it’s estimated that nearly 9,000 different obverse designs were created, struck, and passed off as legal tender. Some featured advertisements on them, while others bore patriotic symbols or sentiments. This token was struck in throughout the Civil War from 1861 to 1865 with an obverse that features Lady Liberty wearing an Indian Headdress, and a reverse that features the phrase “Our Army.”
Tied For Highest Graded And Finest Known Token Of This Type
The mintage of this token is unknown but considering how badly people needed money for exchange during that time, the condition here—graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in fantastic Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 Red (MS66 RD) condition—is amazing! The Red designation means that 85% of the original color remains. According to the PCGS population report, just 42 of these tokens have been submitted for grading—only 8 of which received an MS66 RD grade, which means the token you can secure for your collection is tied for highest graded and finest known at PCGS!
A Virtual Hoard Of Civil War-Themed Extras
Not only will each token come sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic holder and beautifully housed in a deluxe presentation case, but it will be accompanied by a virtual hoard of Civil War-themed extras. In addition to your token, you’ll also receive a Harper’s Weekly newspaper printed during the Civil War, a $30 Confederate Paper Bond, a Cleveland & Toledo Railroad Stock Certificate, reprint photos of Abraham Lincoln and Stonewall Jackson, a copy of the Gettysburg Address, an 1863 Indian Head Cent, and a storybook on coins during the Civil War.
