Want To Buy Stock In A Gold Mine?
The Anglo-Gold Californian Gold Mining Company was formed by explorer, military officer, and politician John C. Frémont to develop his Mariposa Estate, 70 square miles of land in the Sierra foothills that he had purchased from Mexico in 1847. When gold was found on his Mariposa ranch, Frémont became a wealthy man during the subsequent California Gold Rush. Like many mid-19th century companies, the operation was bankrolled with capital from European investors. So eager were British speculators to profit from the California Gold Rush that Fremont’s company sold more stock shares that any other California Gold Rush venture, selling literally thousands of shares in an enterprise of which next to nothing is known.
Frémont’s Gold—Case Closed!
This very early Stock Certificate issued allowed investors in England to participate in the “California Gold Rush” from the safety of their homes. Each paper certificate was printed in the 1850s more than 165 years ago and features hand-signed signatures from this famous historical era. During the Gold Rush era, many “49ers” and gold prospectors squatted on Frémont’s land and legal disputes soon arose between Frémont and neighboring property owners. The United States Supreme Court ultimately sided in Frémont’s favor allowing to keep both his wealth and his land.
