1844-D $5 Liberty Dahlonega

This is, without question, a monster of a coin. Struck at the fabled Dahlonega Mint, this Gold Liberty is a superb, rare Uncirculated Mint State-62 (MS62)-grade coin. Coming from a mintage of just 88,982, only 541 have been graded by either he Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), with just seven grading higher as of this writing. That puts this very coin within the top ten examples known in the world!

How nice a coin is this? Consider the fact that The Smithsonian® has a specimen that has been graded as being in only About Uncirculated-58 (AU58) grade in its collection.

The history of the Dahlonega Mint is unique in the history of the United States. Originally opened in 1838, the mint’s purpose was to process Georgia’s locally mined gold. However, output at this mint was always low. It produced only gold coins — many of which were considered poorly made. Then, in 1861, Confederate forces seized the building at the onset of the Civil War, using it to quarter troops. It was recaptured by the Union the following year, and eventually the building was reopened as a U.S. assay office. It even served as a federal prison for a time! The building stood until 1878, when it was destroyed by a fire.

Though coins from the Dahlonega Mint weren’t always considered of high quality, this 1844-D $5 Gold Liberty is a true beauty. Its incredible luster makes it hard to believe that it was struck more than 175 years ago. We have just one of these fabulous coins in stock, so secure it now and make this “Top 10” example the new jewel of your collection.
