Of those original 1,600 coins, the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) have only graded a combined 288. • U.S. MINT RESTRIKE FROM THE 1800s – The original Gobrecht Silver Dollars were legal tender coins struck in 1836. Just 1,600 were struck and they were issued to gauge the public’s opinion of the new dollar coin. By the mid-1800s, a growing collector market prompted officials at the U.S. Mint to re-strike a number of these coins as medals, which were then sold to an eager public from 1850 to the 1870s.

• COIN DESIGN CLASSIC – The Gobrecht Silver Dollar gets its name from its designer, Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint.
