Capped Bust Dimes From The Historic S.S. Central America Shipwreck
In September of 1857, the S.S. Central America, now known as the “Ship of Gold,” embarked on a fateful journey from Panama to New York City, carrying more than $1.6 million in gold. On September 12, 1857, the ship sailed into the teeth of a Category 2 hurricane, and while anywhere from 40 to 153 people, mainly women and children, were rescued by other ships, most of the 467 passengers and 102 crew members onboard went down with the Central America as it slipped to its watery grave 8,000 feet below. That’s where it stayed for more than 130 years until the ship was not only discovered, but some of the cargo was recovered!
A Treasure Trove Of Pre-Civil War Era Coins
Among the recovered cargo was a treasure trove of U.S. coins, including thousands of Capped Bust and Seated Liberty Dimes. These coins, found in two canvas bags containing more than 8,000 dimes, were recovered from the ship’s purser’s safe. These dimes were more than just currency—they were a vital part of the ship’s daily operations and would have been used to pay the sailors onboard. And, since each coin has a direct link to the Central America, they represent a unique opportunity to own a piece of this historic event.

Struck from 1809 to 1837, the Capped Bust Dime is historically significant as the first U.S. dime to feature the 10 cents denomination. It gets its name from the profile of Liberty on the obverse where she is depicted wearing a capped headband. The Capped Bust Dime was essential to daily transactions in the early 19th century, providing people with a convenient and widely accepted form of currency for smaller purchases—particularly in the Panic of 1857 that followed in the wake of the Central America’s sinking. The loss of the gold on board that would be worth more than $300 million in today’s dollars and was a significant factor in causing one of the earliest economic crises in U.S. history.
