FOUND: Admiral Gardiner’s Cash!

By January, 1809, the three-masted warship Admiral Gardner had made five successful voyages to India for the British East India Company. A solid, well-captained ship, its crew had even driven off French privateers during its fourth voyage. But even the Admiral Gardner proved no match for the forces of nature for on its sixth voyage she was lost in a gale soon after setting sail and foundered on the Goodwin Sands in the English Channel. Along with several casualties to passengers and crew during the tragedy, she sank with her cargo: 48 tons of newly minted 1808 10 Cash copper coins destined to pay the company’s Indian work force. At the time, East India Company officials estimated the loss was £21,579 – equivalent to about $1.9 million in today’s dollars.

Recovered From A Nearly Inaccessible Site

Almost two centuries later, East India copper coins began showing up in the sands dredged from the Goodwins to be used as fill during a construction project. Later, while investigating a fisherman’s snag, divers found the ship and efforts to salvage the wreck were soon launched to recover the precious cargo. But recovery efforts proved difficult in the less-than-ideal condition: the seas were so dangerous at the recovery site that the sunken cargo was accessible for only two hours every day!

Certified As Genuine Shipwreck Coins By NGC

These coins of myth and legend are now available in a limited quantity for you to add to your collection. Each shows the Arms granted to the East India Company in 1698, along with the motto in Latin that translates to “Under the patronage of the King and Parliament of England.” The reverse inscription is Persian, which was the language at the time of India’s Mughal, and translates to “ten cash.” The term “cash” refers to the small coins circulating in Asia during this time period. Each coin has also been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being Genuine, meaning that NGC was able to confirm that they were aboard the Admiral Gardner at the time of the wreck.
