Washington Asks Native American To Give Peace A Chance
When General George Washington took the oath of office to become the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789, he knew the fledgling young nation had many issues before it. One of those issues was dealing with the Native American people who populated much of the country west of the original 13 colonies. At that time, “Manifest Destiny” was a phrase yet to be uttered and subduing the vast numbers of tribes was far from a certainty. Washington and staff in the newly formed War Department knew from experience that many Tribal leaders looked favorably on shiny medals that were given aways as gifts to build trust and friendship.
The Great Father Shares Peace Pipe
New “Indian Peace Medals” finally saw the light of day in 1792 and were enthusiastically received by Tribal leaders. Each oval-shaped medal featured an image of George Washington, the “Great Father” himself, dressed in his general’s uniform sharing a peace pipe with a traditionally dressed American Indian Warrior. Behind them a tomahawk has been placed on the ground symbolizing peace in a literal representation that they have “buried the hatchet.” The reverse displays the Great Seal of the United States that had made its first appearance just 10 years earlier in 1782.
One Of America’s Most Significant—And Rare—Numismatic Treasures
While the medals were popular, War Department staff found it challenging to procure these indispensable silver medals. Lacking the necessary machinery to mass produce these medals, each had to be made by hand and painstakingly engraved by expert craftsmen—task that proved to be very time consuming and expensive. As such, few of these precious and historically significant medals are known to exist today with just 12 specimens know to exist and most of those exist only in institutional collections! How many were buried with their original owners or have been secretly passed down from generation to generation is anyone’s guess.
