1776 Smithsonian Continental Currency Silver & Gold Antiqued 2-pc Commemorative Set NGC MS70 First Day of Issue w/Black Core & Smithsonian Label
Silver & Gold Tributes To 1776 Fractional Currency Notes Designed By Benjamin Franklin
In 1776, our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. A new nation was being born, and it was going to need its own money. Who better to design the notes than statesman, postmaster, inventor, and Renaissance man Benjamin Franklin? Those Continental Currency Notes featured a sundial with the Latin word “FUGIO” meaning “I flee” or “I fly,” and “MIND YOUR BUSINESS.” Essentially, Franklin is suggesting you get on with your business, as time flies! The back of the notes displayed 13 interlinked rings, each featuring the name of one of the colonies, along with the words “WE ARE ONE,” and “AMERICAN CONGRESS.”
Officially Authorized By The Smithsonian
In honor of this important yet mysterious part of United States Numismatic history, the Smithsonian® authorized the minting of a set of commemorative medals featuring the original Benjamin Franklin inspired, Continental Currency designs. Here you can get both the silver and cold commemorative struck by Great Britain’s prestigious Commonwealth Mint. The silver medal was struck in two ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver and the gold medal was struck in a full ounce of 99.99% pure, 24-karat gold.
Flawless Uncirculated Commemoratives From Among The First Issued
Though not legal tender, each commemorative available here has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Mint State-70 (MS70) condition, a designation that means these perfectly-graded pieces have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has certified that these medals are First Day of Issue (FDI) releases, meaning they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date. Each has also been given an amazing, antiqued finish to replicate the appearance of the original 1776 pieces while still maintaining the quality standards that allow the high, Mint State-70 grade—a mark the originals would almost certainly never have obtained! Each will also come sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic holder with a black display core and encapsulated with an exclusive Smithsonian label and accompanied by a storycard and match-numbered Certificates of Authenticity.
