The Silver Dollar That Changed U.S. History

Discovered by a humble fishing trawler in 1993, the long lost Spanish Brig of War was discovered in 300 feet of water just 50 miles south of Louisiana. El Cazador, meaning “the hunter” set sail from Mexico destined for the port of New Orleans with a load of silver coins in 1794. Not far from its destination it went down—the loss of the money changed the entire course of history. Spain, unsuccessful at stabilizing the Territory’s economy, sold Louisiana to France for a small sum, which in turn sold it in 1803 to President Jefferson for $15 million in the Louisiana Purchase. Most of the coins recovered from the wreck were 8 Reales coins, known as “portrait dollars”—they were Spanish-issued and used in the U.S. as legal tender until 1857. Even though large quantities of the 8 Reales were struck, they were used heavily, and not many survived in good condition. Each 8 Reales is authenticated by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be from the El Cazador shipwreck. Dates will range from 1772 to 1783, and each comes with a wooden presentation case and detailed storycard. Don’t delay, these were among the top 2% finest quality coins pulled from the shipwreck. They won’t last long! Dates Vary.
