1950–1963 Franklin Half Dollar Complete 14-pc Proof Set
COMPLETE 14-Piece Collection of Franklin Half Dollar Proofs
You don’t need to spend time finding each of these Franklin Half Dollars for your collection—we’ve done the legwork for you! This full set features all the dates for Franklin Half Dollars in Proof condition, struck from 1950 to 1963. This was the last half dollar series to be minted in highly pure 90% fine silver. And, while the first Franklin Half Dollars came off the coin presses in 1948, Proof Franklins weren’t struck until 1950 and were produced each year in much smaller quantities than their non-Proof brethren.
The End Of A Short-Lived Era
When the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series ended in 1947, the United States Mint unveiled a new design in 1948 for a half dollar that featured Ben Franklin, a Founding Father and one of America’s greatest patriots. It was also the first time someone other than a former president was depicted on a U.S. circulating coin. The coin’s reverse features the Liberty Bell, sided by an eagle with outstretched wings. The series was struck until it was abruptly ended in 1963 after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The Mint planned to temporarily cease production of the Franklin Half Dollar for a one-year-only Commemorative Kennedy Half Dollar. But when the new coin proved to be incredibly popular with the public, the Mint decided to shelve the Franklin Half Dollar permanently.
