“Collectors-Only” Kennedy Half Dollar Ten-Piece Set
The Kennedy Half Dollar was first issued in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated on November 22nd, the previous year. Despite being one of America’s most popular coins, no Kennedy Half Dollars have been released to the public since 2002. Instead, they’re available only to collectors in limited editions. What you have here is a ten-coin roll of Kennedy Half Dollars struck by the U.S. Mint with dates—all different—varying between 2002 and 2020. These are coins that were NOT released for circulation, and each will arrive in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
The Face Of America’s Half Dollar
The story of the Kennedy Half Dollar is now numismatic legend: after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963, Congress moved quickly to ensure that the United States Mint would be able to create a commemorative half dollar featuring the former president’s profile along with the Presidential Seal. The obverse of each Half Dollar thus features a portrait of JFK that was personally approved by Kennedy’s widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, while the reverse displayed the Presidential Coat of Arms. The coins were released in January of the following year—just a few short months after JFK’s passing. The design proved to be so popular that it replaced the existing Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar, and Kennedy has remained the face of the denomination ever since.
