Similar to the Peace Silver Dollar, the Washington Quarter was originally intended as a one-year-only commemorative — in this case, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The design comes from sculptor John Flanagan, who won a competition among nearly 100 artists and sculptors. The design proved so popular that it was then struck for circulation!  First minted n 1932, the Washington Quarter has been struck ever since!

This set brings together the first 10 dates of the Washington Quarter, all struck in 90% fine silver. (No coins were struck in 1933 during the height of the Great Depression). This set can be tough to piece together, as many vintage coins have been melted down for their silver, and these quarters were struck in far smaller mintages than the coins of today. Between 1932 and 1937, for example, the mint struck about the same number of quarters as the Mint now strikes every four or five weeks.
