1966 Series $100 Red Seal Note Featuring Ben Franklin

Legal Tender Notes were first issued by the U.S. Government in 1862 and continued to be released until to 1971, making them the longest-issued form of currency in the country’s history. The design of this 1966 $100 Series Note is gorgeous, with Benjamin Franklin on the front (one of only two non-Presidents to be featured on modern currency) along with a distinctive red seal, and a vignette of Independence Hall—the historic civic building where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were adopted—on the back, along with the words “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS.”

The First And Only Small Sized U.S. Legal Tender One Hundred Dollar Note Ever Issued

The 1966 $100 Series was the first and only small sized U.S. Legal Tender One Hundred Dollar Note ever issued. It was also the first U.S. currency to use the new U.S. Treasury Seal with wording in English as opposed to Latin. As the title implies, the seal and serial numbers on these “Red Seal” notes are printed in red. And, like the 1963 $2 and $5 Series notes, the 1966 $100 Series can be differentiated from past series by the addition of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” printed above Independence Hall on the reverse. In addition, the wording “WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND” that had appeared in previous series has been removed.
