Wyon’s Original Design

Wyon’s original design made its first in appearance 1839 to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. It was inspired by “The Faerie Queene,” a poem written by Edmund Spenser. In the story, Princess Una goes on a quest to free her parents from a ferocious dragon. Along the way she encounters a lion, who, charmed by Una’s beauty, becomes her companion and protector. On the coin, Una is the embodiment of Queen Victoria and the lion represents Great Britain.

Reimagined for Today’s Collectors

The new design features a more modern and exciting reimaging of the Wyon classic. Created by acclaimed Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, it depicts a youthful Una, her hair flowing in the wind from beneath her veil, standing with a scepter and an orb. Her left hand encircles the head of a proud lion whose mane is tussled by the breeze. The bar’s obverse features The Royal Mint’s logo and the gold weight and purity. Plus, each bar available in this offer comes in Original Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition with razor-sharp details that are as fresh and sharp as the day it left the mint.
